December Celestial Delights.

December is one of the busiest months of the year, and every weekend presents us with endless events to choose from. Finding space and stillness is essential for your well-being during the hustle and bustle, and this month offers us two distinctive spiritual moments to encourage this.  December’s full moon is known as the Cold Moon, and the Winter Solstice is happening on December 21st.

Cold Full Moon

December’s Full Moon is called the Cold Moon and occurs tonight-Wednesday, December 7th and reaches its peak at 11:09 pm Eastern Standard Time.

.

The spiritual meaning of December’s Cold Full Moon is an awareness that this is a powerful time for reflection, magic and meditation. Consider these spiritual intentions if you are interested in participating in a Cold Moon ritual:

  • Reflection

  • Development

  • Change

  • Peace

  • Growth

  • Reawakening

  • Shadow work Source

Find the full moon this evening and enjoy its ethereal beauty and presence. Take some deep breaths and reflect on the things you are grateful for.

Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice Celebration. Walking the Labyrinth at St. Andrews in Picton, Ontario.

Wednesday, December 21st, 2022, is the official first day of winter and the Winter Solstice. It's the longest night of the year, and this new season brings a transition of energy as we return to the light. It only happens once a year and is a very auspicious day for many cultures.

Upon the Winter Solstice, the Sun appears at its lowest in the sky. The Sun’s gradual decrease in the sky reverses upon the Winter Solstice, marking what many cultures believe to be a “rebirth” of the Sun as the daylight hours become longer.

While we celebrate the Winter Solstice, those living in the Southern Hemisphere will be simultaneously marking the arrival of summer.

I’ve made a ritual for the Winter Solstice in the last few years. I plan on spending some time in deep meditation on December 21st.   I will then write out what I’m grateful for, prayers for my loved ones, and my intentions for 2023. My church will host a Winter Solstice Celebration, and I will walk the labyrinth on the grounds, review my thoughts, and release them into a bonfire.

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, check your noontime shadow around the time of the solstice: It will be your longest noontime shadow of the year. Conversely, in June, at the time of the summer solstice, you’ll see your shortest noontime shadow. This is because the Sun is at different angles.

Celebrating the Cold Moon and Winter Solstice can be a beautiful way to remember and acknowledge that our lives are part of a larger cosmic order that is constantly changing and renewing, like ourselves.   Creating simple rituals with personal meaning can slow us down in a jam-packed season of doing and help us appreciate what we have and reflect on 2022.

We’ve completed an entire trip around the sun, and now is a beautiful moment to focus on all the good things headed your way!

Love and light.
