How To Help Our Planet.

.

“We are interconnected with nature and with each other. What we do to the planet and its living creatures, we do to ourselves.”

David Suzuki Foundation

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you must decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

Jane Goodall

Happy Earth Day!

I write about Earth Day and share tips on how we can save our planet every year. The Earth Day movement advocates for a clean planet, and Monday, April 22nd, 2024, will mark the 54th year of this annual event.  It engages millions worldwide and has blossomed into Earth Month- 30 days to appreciate the planet and campaign for environmentally friendly practices to preserve it.

Planet vs. Plastics

For 2024, Earth Day Org's focus is its commitment to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health, demanding a 60% reduction in the production of ALL plastics by 2040.

Reducing plastic use can be challenging because it is used for everything. However, there are simple things you can do, like not purchasing single-use laundry, shampoo, and dish soap bottles and switching to using laundry strips, shampoo bars, and refilling dish soap bottles.

My annual blogs on this topic are long and detailed; I won’t repost the material today, but if you are looking for some inspiration or unclear on what you can do, please check last year’s blog for more details:

My 2023 Celebrate Earth Day Blog

We all know our planet is in a crisis, and things have worsened since last year.  It is easy to feel helpless and hopeless and wonder if there is anything that you can do as an individual.   I firmly believe that everyone can make a difference, and this was recently affirmed when a group of senior women in Switzerland took their government’s climate inaction to court and won.

These Swiss women, known as KlimaSeniorinnen, stated that this lack of inaction put them at risk of dying during heat waves.

The verdict cannot be appealed and will have international ripple effects, most directly by establishing a binding legal precedent for all 46 countries signatories to the European Convention on Human Rights.

If Switzerland does not update its policies and reduce emissions, further litigation could follow at the national level, and courts could issue financial penalties,

Way to go, KlimaSeniorinnen!!!

What motivates me the most to pay attention and do something is knowing that what I do today will impact future generations and likely harm my daughter's and future grandchildren’s lives. Global warming is not a natural disaster but a human-made disaster, and don’t underestimate what you, as an individual, can do to make a difference.

Would you like any help figuring out where to start? Could you check around your home? Is there anything you can change? You have power as a consumer and voter, and pushing back and making demands does have an impact. What does your community offer regarding Earth Day Clean Ups, and what are local environmental groups up to? I live in a small community, and at least 4 environmental or conservation groups here are active and do fantastic work.

Do you have any plans for Earth Day? Let me know in the comments below what changes you’ve recently made to help the planet.

A healthy planet ensures your health.

Stay well & be green.
